Axle Eye Repair
Worn or damaged axle eyes are restored to exact factory specifications using specialized mobile repair equipment.
Axle Eye Repair in Northern California
Professional On Site Axle Eye Repair Since 1972
When axle eyes wear out, it creates a serious problem for heavy-duty vehicles. Misaligned axle eyes can cause premature bearing wear, steering problems, and unsafe driving conditions.
At Axle Surgeons™ of Northern California, we specialize in precision axle eye repair using our patented mobile sleeving system. Instead of removing the axle housing and sending it to a shop — which could mean days of downtime and thousands in towing and labor costs — we repair the axle eye directly on your vehicle.
Our technicians machine-bore the worn eye and install a precision-engineered steel sleeve, restoring it to better than factory specifications.
How Axle Eye Repair Works — Step by Step
Our patented repair process has been refined over more than five decades. Here is what happens when our mobile unit arrives at your location:
-
Inspection and measurement. Our technician inspects the axle eye bore using precision gauges to determine the extent of wear and document the current condition. We measure the bore diameter, check for elongation, and assess the spring seat alignment.
-
Setup and alignment. The mobile boring bar is mounted directly on the axle. This is the key to our process — the boring equipment aligns to the axle centerline, ensuring the repaired bore will be perfectly concentric with the housing.
-
Machine-boring. The worn axle eye is bored out to a precise oversize dimension. This removes all the damaged, worn, and out-of-round material, creating a clean, true bore surface.
-
Sleeve installation. A custom-engineered steel sleeve is pressed into the freshly bored eye. The sleeve is manufactured from high grade U.S. steel to exact tolerances, and the interference fit creates a permanent bond that will not work loose under load.
-
Final machining. The inside diameter of the installed sleeve is finish-bored to the exact factory specification for the spring pin. This gives you a bore that is as good as — or better than — the original equipment.
-
Reassembly and verification. The spring pin, bushings, and related hardware are reinstalled. Our technician verifies proper fit, alignment, and torque values before releasing the vehicle back to service.
The entire process is completed on site in a matter of hours, not days.
What Causes Axle Eye Damage
Axle eyes take a tremendous amount of punishment over the life of a vehicle. Here are the most common causes of axle eye wear we see in the field:
- Normal operational wear. Every time a vehicle hits a bump, pothole, or uneven road surface, the spring moves inside the axle eye. Over hundreds of thousands of miles, this constant motion wears the bore oversize and egg-shaped.
- Overloading. Vehicles that routinely carry loads at or above their rated capacity accelerate axle eye wear significantly. The extra weight increases the forces on the spring-to-eye connection.
- Corrosion. Salt, moisture, and road chemicals attack the axle eye bore, creating pitting and uneven surfaces that accelerate mechanical wear.
- Improper lubrication. When spring pin bushings are not properly greased, metal-on-metal contact wears the bore faster than it should.
- Impact damage. Hitting a large pothole, road debris, or a curb can deform or crack an axle eye, requiring immediate repair.
Signs Your Axle Eyes Need Repair
Watch for these warning signs that indicate axle eye wear:
- Clunking or banging noise when driving over bumps — this is the spring pin moving inside a worn bore
- Uneven tire wear caused by the axle shifting out of alignment
- Vehicle pulling to one side under acceleration or braking
- Visible play between the spring and the axle eye when inspected from underneath
- Cracking around the eye — a sign of fatigue that requires immediate attention before the eye fails completely
- Loose or damaged spring pin bushings that wear out prematurely due to an oversize bore
If you notice any of these symptoms, do not delay. A worn axle eye will only get worse, and a complete failure can leave you stranded or cause an accident.
Why Mobile Repair Is Better Than Shop Repair
Traditional axle eye repair requires removing the entire axle housing from the vehicle, loading it onto a flatbed, transporting it to a machine shop, and waiting days for the work to be completed. Then the axle has to be shipped back and reinstalled. The total cost including towing, shop labor, and lost productivity can easily exceed the cost of the repair itself.
Our mobile process eliminates all of that. We bring the machine shop to you. The vehicle stays right where it is — at your yard, dock, job site, or fleet depot. Most axle eye repairs are completed in a single visit, and the vehicle is back in service the same day.
For fleet operators running on tight schedules, this difference is not a luxury — it is a necessity.

Frequently Asked Questions About Axle Eye Repair
How much does axle eye repair cost? The cost of axle eye repair depends on the number of eyes being repaired, the extent of wear, and the vehicle type. Because we come to you and eliminate towing and shop overhead costs, our mobile repair is typically more cost-effective than traditional methods. Call (877) 999-2953 for a free estimate based on your specific situation.
How long does axle eye repair take? Most single axle eye repairs are completed in 3 to 5 hours on site. If multiple eyes need attention, we can typically complete the work in one visit. Complex jobs involving additional axle components may take longer, but we always provide a time estimate before we start.
Can worn axle eyes be repaired, or do I need a new axle? In most cases, worn axle eyes can be fully restored using our patented sleeving process. The repaired eye meets or exceeds the original factory specification, so there is no need to replace the entire axle housing. This saves thousands of dollars compared to a full axle replacement.
Will the repair last as long as the original? Yes — and often longer. Our precision-machined steel sleeves are manufactured from high grade U.S. steel and installed with an interference fit. The result is a bore that is at least as durable as the original casting, and in many cases more resistant to wear because the sleeve material is harder than the original housing.
Do you repair axle eyes on all trailer brands? We repair axle eyes on all major trailer and truck brands, including Kenworth, Peterbilt, Freightliner, International, Mack, Volvo, Great Dane, Wabash, Utility, Hyundai Translead, and many more. Our process works on any standard spring-suspended axle.
